Community Homeless Solutions Volunteer Needs
Discussion and current updates on shelters, efforts in helping our homeless - A Conversation with Teresa Erickson and Eric Johnsen from CHS (April 1, 2020)
CHS is the largest homeless housing agency operating in both Monterey and San Benito Counties. CHS operates five shelters, a respite care facility, over 100 transitional housing beds, and many street outreach services – a total of over 300 homeless men, women and families each night.
With the crisis of the Coronavirus outbreak, CHS has converted the warming Shelter in Salinas to a 24 x 7 shelter for approximately 70 individuals, nearly half who are youth. Recently, three family-sized trailers were added to the shelter capacity and are anticipated to open during the week of May 11, adding approximately 20 additional beds to the shelter. Showers were added to the site and opened in early May for residents in the shelter, making a huge impact on sanitation and general sanity in general.
CHS, in partnership with the City of Salinas, has also opened a new shelter in Chinatown for 16 homeless individuals located at the former "Navigation Center" site. This building also hosts a shower and restroom service for those living on the streets in Chinatown. The adjacent parking lot recently had five trailers delivered to the site that will be used for shelter housing and there are plans to add a "Sprung Shelter" structure that can accommodate another 50 individuals in a shelter-like structure, hopefully by mid-June. An outbreak in the homeless community could be absolutely devastating, yet these are the most vulnerable individuals and families in our communities today.
CHS is in need of both supplies and volunteers to help staff, welcome and monitor the needs of its' homeless guests at the various shelters. Volunteer and Supply needs are updated regularly at the CHS COVID-19 webpage.
